Anna Jane Beaton, 1926, Omaha, NE.
June 21st celebrates the summer solstice and the birth date of my grandmother, Anna Jane Beaton Hyde. She was born 109 years ago in 1907 in Omaha, Nebraska. It was a notable year for celebrity births, such as Katherine Hepburn, Laurence Olivier, John Wayne, and Frida Kahlo, to name just a few. However, no star could ever outshine the grace, beauty, spunk, and wisdom of Grams.
From an early age she inspired me with stories of her travels and adventures. She shared scrapbooks filled with newspaper clippings and photos documenting her life as well as her ancestors. My intention to write a more complete biography for my grandmother’s birthday failed. It is an ongoing project. However, thanks to Amy Johnson Crow and her suggestion to create videos using the free adobe spark program, I compiled a brief video tribute to my grandmother, Anna Jane Beaton Hyde. Corrections: In the video the correct date for Anna Jane’s graduation from Duchesne College in Omaha, Nebraska should be June 1927. The correct date for the year she taught school in Gillette, Wyoming should be 1927-1928.

Kendra, you have done a wonderful job of telling us about your grandmother through pictures and narration. She was a very elegant lady. My grandmother, by comparison, was what I call a “grandma” with the house dresses and granny shoes and she was the mother of thirteen kids . The real key to telling the stories of our ancestors is through capturing the details of their lives. That’s not always easy. You, however, have done a wonderful job.
